Chemotherapy for Adrenal Cancer

Chemotherapy may be used to treat adrenal cancer that has progressed beyond an adrenal gland tumor to distant parts of the body. Because chemotherapy drugs enter the bloodstream and disseminate throughout the body, this systemic treatment can be functional in reaching diffused malignant cells. Ordinarily, chemotherapy is prescribed to be used together with surgery for eliminating the adrenal gland, which is normally the fundamental form of adrenal gland cancer treatment.

Chemotherapy medications destroy malignant cells (as well as some normal and healthy cells) by damaging the cellular DNA, which interferes with a cell’s potential to progress and divide. The most typically recommended chemotherapy medicine for adrenal cancer is mitotane tablets. In addition to destroying adrenal cancer cells, this medicinal product suppresses the adrenal gland’s creation of hormones. This can be beneficial to patients who have the functional adrenal gland tumors and are experiencing signs/symptoms related to excess hormone production.

Mototane: A Chemotherapy Drug

Mitotane (Brand Name; Lysodren) is the medicine most often prescribed for individuals with adrenal cancer. It inhibits the production of hormone by the adrenal gland and also demolishes both adrenal cancerous cells and healthy adrenal tissue. The lysodren tablets can also suppress the typical adrenal steroid hormone formation from the other, normal adrenal gland. This may lead to reduced levels of cortisol and other hormones, which can be responsible for making you feel weak and sick. In case this establishes, patient will need to take steroid hormone pills in order to bring the level of hormone up to normal. This medicine can also alters the other hormones level, such as thyroid hormone or testosterone. In case that occurs, you’d require medications for replacing these hormones as well.

The Mitotane (Lysodren) tablets are supplied as 500 mg dosage strength. Sometimes it is prescribed for a period of time after surgery has eiminated all the (visible) cancer. This is named adjuvant therapy and is meant to destroy any cells that were left behind but were excess tiny to see. Giving the medication this way may help prevent or resist the recurrence of cancer.

In case the cancer has not been completely eliminated by surgery or has come back, treatment through lysodren 500 mg will shrink the cancer in certain patients. Typically, the response lasts about 12 months, but it may be longer for some patients.

This treatment is particularly helpful for individuals with adrenal cancers who have complications caused by the excessive hormone formation. Even when the medicine doesn’t shrink the tumor, it can reduce the abnormal formation of hormone and relieve symptoms. Majority of patients with over hormone production are helped by this therapy.

Side Effects: Mitotane can be responsible for causing a few major side effects. The most common are vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, rashes, sleepiness, and confusion. Sometimes reduced doses of Mitotane can still be useful, effective and cause minimal side effects.

Dosage and Method of Administration

The usual starting dose of mitotane 500 mg for adults is 2 to 3 g (4 to 6 tablets) daily. A health specialist may start treatment at higher doses such as 4-6 g (8-12 tablets). In order to establish the optimal dose for you, your health specialist will monitor regularly the levels of medicine in your blood. Your health specialist may decide to stop the therapy with mitotane temporarily or to reduce the dose in case ou experience certain adverse reactions. Patients need to swallow the tablets/pills with a glass of water during meals containing fat-rich food. Total daily doses can be divided in two or three intakes.

Other Chemotherapy Drugs for Adrenal Cancer

Instead of mitotane, other chemotherapy medicines that may be used for treating patients with adrenal cancer include:

  • Etoposide
  • Vincristine
  • Cisplatin
  • 5-fluorouracil
  • Doxorubicin
  • Paclitaxel

In order to treat advanced adrenal cancer, chemotherapy medicines are sometimes prescribed in combination. One most commonly recommended regimen typically includes cisplatin, doxorubicin and etoposide. Another regimen is streptozocin plus mitotane.

Mitotane Price and Availability

Mitotane (Lysodren) typically falls under the member of miscellaneous antineoplastics drug class. The lysodren 500 mg price in India is less than other places. Prices may also vary depending on the availability of a wide range of brands. Buy this medicine only from a licensed supplier who display an authenticity certificate. Mitotane typically is a prescription medication and legally require a valid prescription letter to be dispensed.
