Eldisine is an anti-neoplastic medicine for intravenous use which can be used alone or together with other oncolytic medicines. It is as a single agent may be useful to treat:
- acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) of childhood resistant to other medicines;
- blastic crises of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML);
- malignant melanoma unresponsive to certain other forms of therapy;
- advanced breast carcinoma, unresponsive to apt endocrine surgery and/or hormonal therapy.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dose should be administered intravenously in a single rapid bolus injection at weekly intervals. Dosage size is determined by the body surface area (BSA). In adults and elderly patients, the proposed starting dosage is 3mg/m2, and children may be started at dosage 4mg/m2. Thereafter, granulocyte counts need to be made before each subsequent dose in order to determine the patient’s sensitivity to the drug. Provided there is no granulocytopenia or other toxicity the dosage may be increased in 0.5mg/m2 steps at weekly intervals.
- Extreme care should be considered in calculating and administering the dose of eldisine 5 mg injection, since overdosage may have a very serious or fatal outcome.
- Dosage of Eldisine should be injected into the large vein in order to avoid the leakage into the surrounding tissues which may result in irritation, cellulitis, or swelling of the veins.
- Low platelet, neurotoxicity and granulocyte count are observed during therapy with vindesine. So, patients should be carefully watched for any signs and symptoms of nerve damage or infection and should be treated appropriately.
- Women of reproductive age living with an active male partner are advised to consider effective contraception during the treatment with eldisine injection, and a few months after the treatment in order to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding women should avoid breastfeeding during treatment with vindesine as it may be responsible for causing harm to the babies.
