Balversa (Erdafitinib)
- Medicine Name: Balversa
- Generic Name: Erdafitinib
- Dosage Form & Strength: Tablets: 3 mg, 4 mg, & 5 mg
- Manufactured By: Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Balversa is a kinase inhibitor used for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma that has
- susceptible FGFR2/3 genetic alterations and
- progressed during or after at least one line of prior platinum-containing chemotherapy including within 12 months of neoadjuvant or adjuvant platinum-containing chemotherapy.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended starting dose is 8 mg (2 × 4 mg Balversa tablet) orally once daily, with a dose increase to 9 mg (3 × 3 mg tablets) once daily depending on serum phosphate levels and tolerability at 2 to 3 weeks.
Swallow tablets completely with or without food. In case vomiting occurs any time after taking tablets, the very next dose should be taken the very next day. Treatment should continue until the disease is progressive or unacceptable toxicity occurs.
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as promptly as possible on the same day. Resume the regular daily dose schedule the next day. Do not take extra tablets to make up for the missed dose.
- Treatment with Balversa 4 mg can cause ocular disorders, including central serous retinopathy or retinal pigment epithelial detachment (CSR or RPED) resulting in visual field defect. Monthly ophthalmological examinations are required during the first four months of therapy and every three months afterwards, and urgently at any time for visual signs/symptoms.
- Increases in the levels of phosphate are a pharmacodynamic effect of Erdafitinib. Hyperphosphatemia was noted as a side effect in patients treated with Erdafitinib. Monitor them for hyperphosphatemia and follow the dosage modification guidelines when needed.
- As per findings, Balversa can cause fetal harm if given to a pregnant woman. Female patients of reproductive age should use apt contraception during treatment with balversa 3 mg and for one month after the final dose. Male patients with female partners of reproductive age should use apt contraception during therapy and for one month after the final dose.
- There is no finding on the existence of erdafitinib in human milk, or the effects of this medicine on the breastfed child, or on the production of milk. Due to the potential for severe side effects from erdafitinib in a breastfed child, lactating women should not breastfeed during therapy with erdafitinib and for 30 days after the final dose.
