Medical Uses
Agilus (dantrolene sodium) is a direct-acting muscle relaxant. It is used for the treatment of malignant hyperthermia (rapid rise in body temperature caused by uncontrolled muscle contractions) in adults and children. It is used in combination with supportive measures to manage this rare but life-threatening condition.
Recommended Dosage:
The recommended initial dose of Agilus (dantrolene sodium) for adult and paediatric patients is 2.5 mg/kg body weight administered rapidly by intravenous (IV) injection. Start treatment with Agilus as soon as a malignant hyperthermia crisis is suspected, i.e., characteristically presenting with muscle rigidity, metabolic acidosis, and/or rapidly increasing body temperature.
As long as the main clinical signs and symptoms of hypoventilation, tachycardia, sustained hyperacidity (pH and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) monitoring required), and hyperthermia persist, repeat a bolus injection of 2.5 mg/kg every 10 minutes until physiological and metabolic abnormalities improve. In case a cumulative dose of 10 mg/kg or greater is considered, the diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia should be re-examined.
