Medical Uses
Veltassa (patiromer) is a potassium binder used for the treatment of hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood) in adults and pediatric patients ages 12 years and older.
Limitation of Use: This therapeutic drug should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood) because of its delayed onset of action.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dosage of Patiromer is administered at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medicines, except those shown not to have a clinically important interaction. Do not heat this medicine (e.g., microwave) or add it to heated foods or liquids. Do not take it in its dry form.
Adults: The recommended starting dose is 8.4 grams patiromer orally once daily. The dose can be up-titrated depending on serum potassium level at 7 days or longer intervals, in increments of 8.4 grams.
Pediatric Patients Ages 12 years and older: The recommended starting dose is 4 grams patiromer orally once daily. The dose can be titrated depending on serum potassium level at 7 days or longer intervals, in increments of 4 grams.
