Raxone (Idebenone)
Raxone (Idebenone)
- Medicine Name: Raxone
- API: Idebenone
- Dosage Form & Strength: Tablets: 150 mg
- Manufactured By: Santhera Pharmaceuticals
Raxone (Idebenone) is a medicine used for the treatment of visual impairment in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over with Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), an inherited disease characterized by progressive loss of sight.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dose of Raxone is 900 mg/day (2 tablets of 150 mg, 3 times a day) with food. These film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole with water. The tablets should not be broken or chewed. Raxone 150 mg tablets should be administered with food because food increases the bioavailability of idebenone.
- Caution should be exercised when prescribing Raxone 150 mg to patients with hepatic or renal impairment. Adverse events have been seen in patients with hepatic impairment, which have caused temporary interruption or discontinuation of therapy.
- The metabolites of idebenone are coloured and may cause chromaturia, i.e. a reddish-brown discoloration of the urine. This effect is harmless, not related to haematuria, and does not need any adaptation of dose or discontinuation of therapy. Caution must be exercised to ensure that chromaturia does not mask changes of colour because of other reasons (such as renal or blood disorders).
- The medicine Raxone contains lactose. Patients with rare hereditary complications of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not be treated with this therapeutic drug.
- Idebenone may block P-glycoprotein (P-gp) with possible exposure increases of, e.g., dabigatran etexilate, digoxin, or aliskiren. These medicinal products should be used with caution in patients receiving idebenone. The medicine Idebenone is not a substrate for P-gp in vitro.
