Pedea (Ibuprofen 5 MG/mL)
Pedea (Ibuprofen 5 MG/mL)
- Medicine Name: Pedea
- API: Ibuprofen
- Dosage Form & Strength: Injection: 5 mg/mL
- Manufactured By: Recordati Rare Diseases Inc.
Pedea is a solution for injection that contains the active substance ibuprofen. It is used to treat ‘patent ductus arteriosus’ in newborn premature babies who were born 6 or more weeks too early (less than 34 weeks gestational age). Patent ductus arteriosus is a condition where the ductus arteriosus (the blood vessel that allows blood to bypass the baby’s lungs before birth) fails to close after birth. This causes heart and lung problems in the baby.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended therapy of Pedea consists of three intravenous (IV) injections administered at 24-hour intervals. The initial injection should be administered within the first 6 hours of life. The ibuprofen dose is adjusted to the body weight as follows:
- 1st injection: 10 mg/kg
- 2nd and 3rd injections: 5 mg/kg
- Before administering Pedea, it is essential to conduct a thorough echocardiographic assessment to identify any significant patent ductus arteriosus, rule out pulmonary hypertension, and exclude congenital heart diseases dependent on ductal flow.
- Pedea should not be used as a prophylactic treatment in newborn infants, especially those born prematurely and less than 28 weeks gestational age, due to the heightened risk of pulmonary and renal adverse events observed within the first 3 days of life.
- Due to its ability to displace bilirubin from its binding site to albumin, ibuprofen 5 mg/ml poses a potential risk of bilirubin encephalopathy in premature newborn infants. Consequently, it is contraindicated in infants with significantly elevated bilirubin concentrations.
- Rare but serious skin reactions, including exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis, have been reported with NSAID use, including ibuprofen. If signs and symptoms of severe skin reactions, such as rash or mucosal lesions, appear, discontinue therapy with ibuprofen immediately.
