- Medicine Name: Neupro

- Manufactured By: UCB
Neupro (rotigotine transdermal patch) is a dopamine agonist, used for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).
Recommended Dosage: Apply once daily to the skin; press firmly in place for 30 seconds, making good contact. Do not place Neupro transdermal patch on oily, irritated, or damaged skin, or where it will be rubbed by tight clothing. Avoid using the same site more than once every 14 days. The prescribed dose may be achieved using single or multiple patches.
- Parkinson’s disease: Initially, 2 mg/24 hours for early-stage disease or 4 mg/24 hours for advanced-stage disease. The dose may be increased as required by 2 mg/24 hours at weekly intervals, up to 6 mg /24 hours for early-stage disease, and up to 8 mg/24 hours for advanced-stage disease.
- Restless Legs Syndrome: Initially, 1 mg/24 hours, increased as required by 1 mg/24 hours at weekly intervals, up to 3 mg/24 hours.
To discontinue treatment with Neupro (rotigotine transdermal patch), reduce the dose gradually until complete withdrawal of the treatment.
- Neupro contains a sulfite (sodium metabisulfite). Sulfites can cause serious allergic reactions that are life threatening to those who are sensitive to sulfites. Those with asthma are more sensitive to sulfites. Remove the patch promptly and call your doctor in case you have swelling of the lips or tongue, chest pain, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
- Neupro may make you fall asleep all of a sudden or without warning while doing normal activities, such as driving, which may cause accidents. Inform your doctor immediately if this happens. Drinking alcohol or taking other drugs that cause drowsiness may increase the chances of becoming sleepy while using Neupro. Avoid driving, using hazardous machinery, or doing other dangerous activities until you know how the medicine affects you.
- Neupro can cause decreased blood pressure, especially while starting or increasing the dose. Increased blood pressure and heart rate, weight gain, fainting, and fluid retention also can occur. In case you faint or feel dizzy, sweaty, or nauseated when you stand up from sitting/lying down, or have an unusually fast increase in weight, swelling, or fluid retention, mainly in the ankles or legs, inform your doctor.
- Avoid exposing the Neupro patch you are wearing to electric blankets, heating pads, heat lamps, saunas, heated water beds, hot tubs, and direct sunlight. Excess medication could be absorbed into the body. Also, do not wear the patch during medical procedures called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or cardioversion because this could cause skin burns.
- Rotigotine transdermal patch can cause or worsen psychotic symptoms including hallucinations, agitation, confusion, excessive suspicion, aggressive behavior, delusional beliefs, and disorganized thinking in those with PD or RLS. The chances of having hallucinations or these other psychotic-like changes are greater in those with PD who are elderly, taking Rotigotin, or taking higher doses of Rotigotin. If you have any of these complications, talk to your doctor.
